What is BIAB?

BIAB (Builder In A Bottle) is a soak off gel that strengthens and protects natural nails. It provides a strong yet flexible overlay, making it a gentler alternative to acrylics or dipping systems. BIAB is ideal for weak or brittle nails and promotes growth and can be worn alone for a natural look or as a base for long lasting gel polish.

Understanding BIAB Consistency

General Consistency

  • Thicker than standard gel polish: BIAB has a self levelling gel formula that’s noticeably thicker than regular polish or base coats.
  • Not as hard as acrylics: It stays flexible, giving strength without being rock solid. This helps prevent cracking on natural nails.
  • Soft gel nature: Because it’s a soak off gel, the viscosity feels more elastic than hard gel, meaning it has some “give” when cured.

Workability:

  • Medium-thick viscosity: Thick enough to build structure (apex and overlay), but still fluid enough to self level with minimal effort.
  • Self levelling: Flows into a smooth finish on its own, which reduces brush strokes and filing. You usually just guide it, rather than push it around like acrylic.
Pro Tip: Use a thin liner brush to guide the BIAB down the sidewalls and shape the apex for a cleaner, more controlled application.
  • Controlled movement: It doesn’t run like thin gel polish, but you also can’t leave it sitting too long without spreading as it slowly levels out.
Pro Tip: Work on one nail at a time, then have your client cure it immediately. While that nail is curing, start on the opposite hand. This method keeps the BIAB structure in place, prevents flooding into the sidewalls or cuticle, and ensures a flawless finish.

Application Feel:

  • "Honey like" texture: Many techs describe it as being similar to honey - thick but smooth and slightly elastic.
  • Easier than acrylic: No powder/liquid ratio to manage. The consistency makes it beginner friendly.
  • Layering: Thin layers feel more like a base gel; thicker layers are possible for building strength and shaping.
Pro Tip: When applying BIAB, I prefer to work in a single, even layer. I apply it thick enough to create structure and strength, but not so thick that it looks bulky or unnatural. The goal is a smooth, balanced layer that enhances the nail’s shape while still keeping a natural appearance.

Key Benefits of BIAB

One of the main reasons BIAB has become so popular is because it delivers the best of both worlds - strength and protection for natural nails, without the heaviness or harshness of traditional acrylics. Its versatility and durability make it a favourite among nail techs and clients, offering results that look natural while lasting longer.

  • Strength & Protection: Creates a strong overlay that shields natural nails from breaking or splitting.
  • Flexibility: Unlike acrylics, BIAB bends with the natural nail, reducing lifting and damage.
  • Promotes Growth: Encourages clients’ natural nails to grow longer and healthier over time.
  • Natural Finish: Can be worn on its own for a clean, polished look or used as a base for gel polish designs.
  • Lightweight & Comfortable: Feels less bulky than traditional systems, making it more comfortable for everyday wear.
  • Gentler Alternative: Soak off removal is kinder on natural nails compared to harsh filing of hard gels or acrylics.
  • Time Efficient: Speeds up salon services with easy application straight from the bottle, no mixing required.
