Perfecting Your BIAB Application

Once your nails are perfectly prepped, it’s time to bring everything together with the BIAB application itself. This is where the structure, strength, and overall finish of your set are created. A proper application ensures smooth coverage, lasting adhesion, and that professional, salon quality look clients notice instantly.

In this section, we’ll go step by step through how to apply and perfect your BIAB in a single, well structured layer. You’ll learn how to control the product, guide it to create your apex, and self level it for a flawless finish. The BIAB brand I personally use and recommend is designed so that one strong, even layer is all you need to achieve a smooth, durable result. It levels beautifully, builds the perfect structure, and saves time without adding unnecessary bulk. The accompanying video will walk you through each movement in real time, showing you exactly how to apply and refine your BIAB for that professional, salon quality finish every time.

Keep in mind that different BIAB brands can vary in thickness, cure time, and flexibility. Always check your product’s instructions before starting, and adapt your technique accordingly to achieve the best outcome.Once you’ve mastered this step, your sets will not only look smoother and more structured but will also wear longer and perform better which in turn will set the foundation for professional, reliable results every single time!

Step by Step Overview: BIAB Application

Now that the nails are clean, shaped, and completely free of dust or debris, we’re ready to move into the BIAB application. This is where all your prep work comes together, building the structure, strength, and smooth finish that make BIAB so durable and beautiful. Follow along with the steps below as you watch the video demonstration to ensure a consistent and professional application. Click the image alongside to watch the full video tutorial.

If required by your brand:
Cleanse & dehydrate (if required by your brand):
Some BIAB systems require a dehydrator or primer to assist with adhesion. If your brand recommends these, start by wiping each nail with isopropyl alcohol or cleanser, then apply dehydrator and/or acid free primer. Allow it to air dry before continuing.
(Note: I don’t include this step in my personal process, but it’s important to check your brand’s instructions.)

Thin slip/base layer: Most BIAB brands recommend starting with a very thin slip or base layer before building. This helps the product bond evenly to the nail. If your system doesn’t require it, you can skip this step and move straight into building your structure layer.
(In my process, I begin with the build layer, but follow what your BIAB brand suggests for best results.)

1. Build Layer (Nail by Nail): Working one nail at a time, apply a controlled bead of BIAB over the nail (or base layer if your BIAB system recommends it). Keep the bulk in the stress area to form your apex, then gently guide the product toward the sidewalls and free edge. Avoid flooding the cuticle area.

2. Perfecting the Application: Once your build layer is applied, use a fine liner brush to carefully guide the product closer to the cuticle and along the sidewalls for a clean, precise finish. Run the brush lightly down the centre of the nail to refine the apex and even out the self levelling.

3. Cure as you go (one nail at a time): Once you’ve perfected the product placement on one nail, cure that finger before moving on to the next nail on the opposite hand. Working this way keeps the BIAB perfectly in place and prevents it from running or self levelling too much. Continue alternating hands, curing each finger as you go to maintain control and a flawless finish.

4. Full Cure: Once all nails are built, give them a complete final cure following your brand’s recommended time to ensure full polymerisation.

5. Refine Shape (if needed): If there are any uneven areas or bumps, lightly file and buff to perfect the silhouette, working from sidewalls to free edge to surface. Be gentle to maintain the apex.
(Note: I personally don’t usually need to do this step, as using the fine liner brush during application helps refine the nails beautifully. The BIAB brand I use also self levels extremely well, so extra filing is rarely necessary.)

6. Colour or Finish:

  • For gel colour: apply thin coats, curing between layers. Use your fine liner brush to ensure precision.
  • For a natural BIAB look: go straight to top coat.

Pro tip: When applying colour, I like to use a fine liner brush to get as close as possible to the cuticle area and sidewalls. Some gel polish brushes can be a little too wide, and this technique helps achieve that clean, precise finish that makes the nails look perfectly polished.

7. Top Coat & Final Cure: Apply your top coat. Using your liner brush ensure to cap the free edge and make sure the top coat has covered all surface area of each nail and cure fully. If your top coat leaves a tacky residue, cleanse the nails with nail cleanser.

8. Finish Filing for Crisp Edges: Once your top coat has fully cured, use your hand file to refine and perfect the shape. This “finish filing” step sharpens the edges, cleans up the sidewalls, and gives your set that crisp, salon quality look. It’s a small detail, but it makes a huge difference. This extra step is what makes your work stand out from others.

9. Apply Cuticle Oil and Hand Cream: To finish, apply cuticle oil to each nail and massage it in gently to nourish the skin and surrounding area. Follow with hand cream and a light hand massage to complete the service.

Creating the Perfect Apex & Structure

Getting your apex and structure right is what gives BIAB nails their signature strength and natural look. The goal is to create a smooth, even surface that feels balanced and looks effortless, not bulky or uneven.

Use these quick checks as you work:

  • The apex should sit roughly one third of the way up from the cuticle area as this is where the nail needs the most strength.
  • Keep the cuticle area and sidewalls thin, blending them seamlessly into the nail.
  • The highest point of the apex should flow naturally into the tip, not look like a bump.
  • Allow the BIAB to self level - guide it gently, don’t overwork it.
  • Flip the hand upside down for a few seconds if needed to help the apex settle perfectly before curing.

Work one nail at a time to maintain control and structure. Flash cure as you go as it prevents flooding and keeps your apex crisp and consistent across every nail. While one nail is curing, you can work on the other hand.

Pro Tips & Common Mistakes

Here are a few of my favourite tips to help make your BIAB application smoother, cleaner, and more consistent. These small habits make a noticeable difference in your structure and overall finish.

💡 Work one nail at a time so the BIAB can self level exactly where you place it.

💡 Gently guide the product rather than pushing it as surface tension will do most of the work for you.

💡 You can tilt the nail downward for a few seconds to help the apex form naturally without excess bulk.

💡 Use your fine liner brush to clean up the cuticle area and sidewalls for the crispest finish.

💡 Always check the nail from multiple angles before curing to make sure the structure is balanced.

Even tiny application errors can change how the nail looks or wears, so here are a few common mistakes to watch out for.

⚠️ Using too much product, which causes flooding around the cuticle or sidewalls.

⚠️ Over working the BIAB, breaking its self level and creating lumps or ridges.

⚠️ Building the apex too far forward, making the nail prone to snapping.

⚠️ Not getting close enough to the cuticle, leaving a gap that becomes visible after a few days of growth.

⚠️ Leaving too much bulk on the sides, which makes the nails look wide and uneven.

By watching the application videos in this section, you’ll see exactly how these tips are used in real time and how each common mistake is avoided through proper technique. Take your time, follow the steps closely, and you’ll notice your BIAB sets become smoother, cleaner, and more consistent with every application.

You’ve now learned every step that goes into creating a beautifully structured BIAB application. From control, to self levelling and to refining the finish. With a bit of practice and patience, these techniques will start to feel natural, and your results will get cleaner and more consistent with every set. Remember, BIAB is all about slow, steady movements and trusting the product to do its job.Keep practicing, stay confident, and don’t forget to celebrate your progress along the way. You’re building real skill here, and it absolutely will show with time.
