The Importance of Proper Gel X Removals

Even though the removal process for Gel X is very similar to BIAB, it’s just as important to do it with care. Using the correct soak off method protects the natural nails and ensures they stay healthy and strong underneath the extensions.

Because Gel X tips are a full cover system, it can be tempting to rush the removal or try to peel them off but doing so can cause unnecessary damage to the nail plate. The soak off method gently breaks down the product without over filing or force, keeping the nails smooth and intact.

Taking the time to remove Gel X properly helps maintain the health of the natural nails and gives your clients confidence that they can enjoy extensions long-term without any damage or weakening.

Step by Step Overview: Gel X Removals

Below is a quick written guide to accompany the video demonstration. The Gel X removal process is very similar to BIAB removal, the main goal is to gently remove the extensions without damaging the natural nail underneath. Follow this method step by step to keep your client’s nails healthy and ready for reapplication. Click the image alongside to watch the full video tutorial.

1. File Down the Bulk: Use a coarse carbide bit to remove most of the Gel X product. This breaks the seal and allows the acetone to penetrate more effectively later on.

2. Trim Down the Extensions: Use nail clippers or tip cutters to shorten the Gel X extensions to the client’s natural nail length.
Pro tip: This reduces soak time and prevents unnecessary pressure on the natural nail during removal.

3. Soak with Acetone: Using the pre made foil wraps with cotton pads, soak in acetone and place on each nail. Leave them on for around 10–15 minutes, depending on the Gel X brand and thickness.

4. Gently Remove Softened Product: Unwrap one nail at a time and use a cuticle pusher to gently push off the softened Gel.
Pro Tip: If a small amount of product remains, you can lightly refine it using your e-file on a very low speed 3000-5000RPM, just be gentle and avoid applying pressure to the natural nail. If it resists, rewrap and soak for a few more minutes, never scrape or force it.

5. Lightly Buff and Refine: Once the Gel X is removed, use your e-file with a fine sanding band to smooth the natural nail surface.
Wipe with alcohol or nail cleanser to remove residue.

6. Shape and Tidy (optional): At this stage, you can shape the client’s natural nails and trim or tidy the cuticles to give a clean, finished look, or to prepare the nails for a fresh Gel X or BIAB application.

7. Finish with Hydration: Apply cuticle oil and a light hand lotion to rehydrate the nails and skin.
Pro Tip: Encourage your client to continue applying cuticle oil daily between appointments.

Gel X removals are all about patience and precision. Taking the time to gently thin, soak, and lift the extensions keeps the nails strong and prevents damage to the natural base you’ll reapply on next time. Remember, careful removals are what set true professionals apart and ensure every new set starts on a flawless foundation.
