Achieving the Perfect Nail Prep for Gel X

Proper nail preparation is the foundation of every flawless Gel X set. Unlike BIAB, where product is built over the natural nail, Gel X extensions rely entirely on strong adhesion between the natural nail and the gel tip, so if prep isn’t done correctly, lifting and premature pop offs are almost guaranteed. In this section, you’ll learn how to perfectly prep for Gel X, including cuticle care, gentle surface buffing, correct use of the e-file, and the crucial steps that ensure your nail tips bond seamlessly and stay secure for weeks.

It’s worth noting that different Gel X brands may have slightly different preparation requirements, so always read the manufacturer’s directions carefully before you begin. Following these steps precisely will give you maximum adhesion, a flawless fit, and long lasting, salon quality results.

Step by Step Overview: Gel X Nail Prep

Similar to BIAB nail prep, this process focuses on creating a clean, perfectly prepped nail plate to ensure strong adhesion and long lasting results. Below is a quick written guide to accompany the video demonstration. This is the exact process I follow for Gel X prep, but remember that the order of steps 1-3 can be adjusted slightly to suit your workflow and what feels most comfortable for you. Use this as a reference to stay consistent and ensure your prep is always thorough and professional. Click the image alongside to watch the full video tutorial.

1. Lightly drill the nail plate: Remove the natural shine from the nail plate using a fine-medium sanding band at 5000 RPM.

2. Cuticle Preparation:
Gently push back the cuticle and sidewalls to expose the nail plate. Using your cuticle nipper, carefully trim away any lifted or dead skin that was pushed back.

3. Clean up the cuticle area: Using your e-file, go in with a diamond drill bit (cylinder or round at 5000 - 8000 RPM) to tidy up the cuticle area and smooth the skin. This step creates a clean, professional finish and ensures the Gel X tips bond seamlessly without lifting.

4. Shape the natural nail (optional): Since Gel X involves applying an extension over the natural nail, shaping isn’t always necessary. However, it’s still a good idea to lightly neaten the free edge so it mirrors the tip shape. This small step helps with cleaner placement and a more polished final look.

5. Remove dust and debris: Brush or wipe away dust on the nails and in your work area.

6. Ready for application: The nails are now fully prepped and ready for Gel X tip application.

Pro Tips & Common Mistakes

Here are a few helpful tips to make your Gel X prep smoother and give your sets strong, lasting adhesion.

💡 Take your time with prep because clean, tidy nails make all the difference to how well the tips stick.

💡 Always make sure the nail plate is fully matte before applying dehydrator or primer.

💡 Use thin, even layers of dehydrator and primer as too much can cause lifting instead of helping adhesion.

💡 Wipe over the nails with a lint free pad or a fluffy brush before application to remove every bit of dust or oil.

💡 Even though shaping is optional, a neat free edge helps the tip line up perfectly and look cleaner.

Gel X prep might seem simple, but skipping small details can cause lifting or tips to pop off within days. Similar to BIAB, here are a few common mistakes to watch out for.

⚠️ Leaving shine or oils on the nail plate as adhesion relies on a fully matte surface.

⚠️ Not fully cleaning up the cuticle area before applying the tip.

⚠️ Skipping dehydrator or primer steps (if required by your brand).

⚠️ Touching the nails after prep, even slight oils from your fingers can affect adhesion.

Gel X prep is all about precision and patience and once you nail it, your sets will last beautifully with flawless adhesion every time. Don’t get discouraged if a few tips lift or pop off in the beginning; that’s completely normal when you’re learning. Each set you do helps you refine your timing, pressure, and product control. The key is consistency, clean prep, correct application, and proper curing. Keep practising, trust your technique, and you’ll soon find your Gel X sets looking cleaner, stronger, and more professional than ever!
