Achieving the Perfect Nail Prep for BIAB

Nail prep is one of the most important steps in achieving long lasting, flawless BIAB nails. Proper preparation ensures the product adheres correctly, prevents lifting, and creates a smooth, clean base for application. In this section, we’ll cover everything you need to know to master nail prep, including cuticle care, correct use of e-file drill bits, shaping the natural nail, removing surface oils, and creating the perfect foundation for BIAB application. The accompanying video will walk you through each step visually, showing you the correct techniques and angles in real time so you can confidently follow along.

It’s also important to note that different BIAB brands have slightly different preparation requirements as some require a separate base coat, primer, or dehydrator, while others are formulated to be all in one systems. Always take a moment to read the manufacturer’s directions carefully before you begin, as these steps can vary between brands. The BIAB brand I highly recommend is an all in one primer and base, meaning no extra base, dehydration, or priming steps are required. This saves time and helps you achieve beautiful, durable results with no lifting.

These steps shown in the video are the correct way to perform nail prep for all BIAB systems, but keep in mind that some brands may simply require you to add an extra primer, dehydrator, or base coat step at the end. If you choose to use a different BIAB brand, make sure to follow that manufacturer’s specific preparation instructions to ensure the best adhesion and long lasting wear.

Step by Step Overview: BIAB Nail Prep

Below is a quick written guide to accompany the video demonstration. This is the exact process I follow for nail prep, but the order of steps 1-3 can be adjusted slightly to suit your workflow and what feels most comfortable for you. Use this as a reference to stay consistent and ensure your prep is always thorough and professional. Click the image alongside to watch the full video tutorial.

1. Lightly drill the surface: Remove the natural shine from the nail plate using a fine-medium sanding band at 5000 RPM.

2. Push back the cuticles:
Gently push back the cuticle and sidewalls to expose the nail plate. Using your cuticle nipper, carefully trim away any lifted or dead skin that was pushed back.

3. Clean up the cuticle area: Using your e-file, go in with a diamond drill bit (cylinder or round at 5000 - 8000 RPM) to tidy up the cuticle area and smooth the skin. This step creates a clean, professional finish and ensures the BIAB can bond perfectly without lifting.

4. Shape the natural nail: Using a hand file, refine the free edge to your client's desired length and shape. Ensure each nail is even and consistent, as BIAB is applied directly to the natural nail and will enhance the shape underneath.

5. Remove dust and debris: Brush or wipe away dust on the nails and in your work area.

6. (If required): Apply dehydrator, primer and a base coat according to your BIAB brand’s directions.

7. Ready for application: The nails are now fully prepped and ready for BIAB.

Pro Tips & Common Mistakes

Here are a few of my go to tips to help make your BIAB prep easier, cleaner, and longer lasting. These small habits make a huge difference in your final results.

💡 Always double check your prep under bright light as any leftover shine or cuticle will cause lifting.

💡 Work one hand at a time to prevent oils or dust from settling on prepped nails.

💡 Use gentle pressure with your drill bits and let the bit do the work.

💡 After trimming cuticles, use your diamond bits to tidy the area for a clean, salon perfect look.

💡 Wipe over the nails with a lint free pad or fluffy brush before applying product to remove all dust and debris.

💡 Replace sanding bands regularly as a dull band can overheat or scratch the nail plate.

Even small prep errors can cause big problems later, like lifting, peeling, or uneven application. Here are a few of the most common mistakes to avoid.

⚠️ Rushing through cuticle work as leftover skin causes lifting every time.

⚠️ Over filing the natural nail as this can thin the plate and cause sensitivity.

⚠️ Skipping dehydration or primer (if your BIAB brand requires it).

⚠️ Touching the nail surface after prep as oils from your fingers can ruin adhesion.

⚠️ Not removing all dust before applying BIAB, even tiny particles can stop the product bonding properly.

Nail prep takes practice, but once you master it, every set you do will look cleaner, last longer, and feel more professional. Don’t stress if it takes time to get your rhythm because every client, every nail, and every set helps you improve. The more consistent your prep becomes, the easier your BIAB application will feel. Keep refining your technique, trust the process, and you’ll notice a huge difference in your results. You’ve got this! <3
